ashley-in-wondrland asked: what did you go to school for to become an event planner?

I actually didn’t go to school for it. I fell into it via working for charities after completing my degree. Experience trump education in this field. Although, pursuing a certificate/diploma in events is not a bad idea.

i approve of all of these!!

especially the bar thing. serve what you want? who says you have to have EVERYTHING available to your guests. it’s one night and it’s YOUR wedding!

want to only have wine and a sparkling? do it! want to create a signature cocktail for the night? do it! juice bar? DO IT!!!

i am surprised by this.

i think it’s painting all event vendors with a broad brush when it’s simply not true.

my day job? event catering. and my quotes are based on menu and food prices. if you want chocolate-covered strawberries in december, sure they will cost you more. because they aren’t grown here in december - not because you wanted to get married.

my side gig? event planner. and the only thing that makes my quote high, is the amount of time you need me to be involved. and unless you are a charitable organization, the price per hour is still the same.

flowers are based on seasons. you want something out of season and out of country? expect to pay a premium.

a dj is a dj. but if you require him to be your MC and onsite for 9 hrs - of course he can’t play anywhere else and will charge you accordingly.

im not saying wedding markup doesn’t happen, but i think this is making it sound more rampant than it really is.

all this is based on my experiences in the industry for the past few years.

lifeisbrightandbeautiful asked: Your blog is such a great resource! I am still in high school but I was wondering - how did you get into the event management business? and also if you have any tips that would be great

Hi there! I got there by accident. While I had been part of organizing events in high school, it wasn’t until I got a job with a charitable organization that started me to where I am today. I spent a few year working with non-profits in a work and volunteer capacity before taking a chance and sending cold resumes out to different companies. One took a chance and the rest is history!

If events is what you want to do, experience is key in this industry. Volunteering is the best way to learn about events from the ground up. When you’ve garnered enough, join event committees to see the full planning process. Volunteer for different types of events to narrow down what type of events you like and what matches your skills and passions.

It can be fun. But it’s not all glamour and gold. It’s lugging tables at 2am. It’s having the smell of lobsters seep put of your pores. It’s labeling 200 conference badges. But the hard work is worth it!

Good luck and thanks for writing in!
